Party with the best of them

February 28, 2013

I’m in Cape Town for the Design Indaba, in my opinion, the best such festival in the world, not least for the design legends which take part. Day One had Seymour Chwast, Push Pin founder and design legend for six decades (no thats not a typo, six whole decades), Pentagram partner Paula Scher now in her third decade at the firm, and a young fella who will one day join them up there on that lofty pantheon, Mashashi Kawamura of Party. You may think it too early to in his career to make such a claim, but then take a look at this video. A crowdsourced graphic mosaic pulled together via social media? HTF did he do that?

And that’s the great thing about festivals like this, being exposed to things you wouldn’t normally. And it was on that theme that at the end of the first day, my Iraqi designer and myself ended trapped in a lesbian heavy metal club. You should try everything once as they say and well, we thought the music might be a bit different.
