Somerset House has closed its gates to yet another super successful London Fashion Week. Critical voices from around the globe routinely praise London and its designers for exhibiting creativity and genuine talent. There is something different about British Fashion…foreign spectators simply devour it. I have a feeling it is something to do with the symbiosis between the high street and high fashion, the gritty and the glorious? Relatively mundane things like ‘fish’, ‘loo roll’, ‘kids toys’ and ‘bacofoil trays’ accessorise the London catwalk shows and…boom, they’re propelled into the sphere of Art. Well-observed and confidently curated, it’s kitchen sink stuff juxtaposed with satins and silks and the world is weak at the knees.
Mock it all you will – having the freedom to experiment and laugh at ourselves is one of our greatest exports and something which enables Britain to take a leadership position in the Cultural and Creative Industries. It’s at times like these that I despair at the government’s threats to cut arts funding. As Boris quite rightly put it ‘don’t kill the goose that lays the golden egg’.
